What Do People Live For? A concert to mark the 150th anniversary of Tomáš Baťa’s birth, Smíchov Community Centre – Protestant Church, The concert takes its name from Bohuslav Martinů’s opera, based on Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy’s short story *Where There Is Love, There Is God*. Through this project, we wish to symbolically commemorate the 150th anniversary of Tomáš Baťa’s birth and highlight the creative connection between this leading Czech composer and this visionary figure, as well as his company. The evening will open with the composition *Střevíček* – a live musical accompaniment to the screening of the documentary film *Lady’s Shoe*. This music was originally composed for a modern advertisement and illustrates the significant role played by Bohuslav Martinů’s collaboration with the progressive world of the Baťa factories. The highlight of the concert will be a performance of the one-act pastoral opera *Čím lidé žijí?* (What Do People Live By?). This combination of works will be performed for the very first time on 12 October 2026 at 8.00 pm at the Smíchov Community Centre – the Evangelical Church. The choice of this venue is no coincidence – the plot features a main character named Martin, whose saintly namesake is the patron saint of the poor and of many craftsmen. Programme: Bohuslav Martinů: *The Little Shoe* – music for a promotional and documentary film, H 239 Bohuslav Martinů: What Men Live By (H 336), a one-act pastoral opera with a libretto by Bohuslav Martinů based on a short story by Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy. The concert performance of the opera takes place with the permission of Boosey & Hawkes Music Publishers Limited. The concert will take place under the patronage of Jiří Drahoš, First Deputy Speaker of the Senate, and Václav Láska, Senator for Prague 5.
